In-Practice vs. Attendance Ultrasound CPD: Which Is Right for Your Vet Team

You've decided it's time to invest in ultrasound CPD for yourself or your team. You search online, and the options split almost immediately into two camps: attendance courses at a training centre, and in-practice training delivered in your own clinic.

Both promise to improve your scanning skills. Both will cost money and take a day (or more) out of your clinical schedule. So which one actually delivers?

As veterinary ultrasound trainers who work predominantly in-practice, we have an obvious perspective. But we also came through attendance courses ourselves, and we understand exactly what each format does and doesn't do well. This post is our honest breakdown.

What attendance courses do well

Attendance-based ultrasound CPD, whether a single study day or a multi-day programme at a university or training centre, has genuine strengths.

You're immersed. Away from the phone, the consults, and the client in reception, you can give the material your full attention. The environment is designed for learning, the equipment is typically high-spec, and you'll often be scanning alongside colleagues from other practices, which brings useful peer discussion.

For certain things, particularly specialist-level content, certificate programmes, or techniques that genuinely require a high-end scanner to demonstrate, attendance courses are hard to beat.

Where attendance courses fall short for most GP vets

Here's the problem most vets won't tell you about until after they've attended: the machine you train on is almost never the machine you go home to.

Referral-centre and training-centre ultrasound equipment is typically premium-tier. It produces beautiful images with relatively little effort. Your practice scanner , whether it's a mid-range portable, an older console, or a compact point-of-care device, behaves very differently. The presets are different, the transducer frequencies are different, the ergonomics are different.

When you return to practice on a Monday morning and pick up your probe, the muscle memory you built over the weekend doesn't transfer cleanly. The settings you learned to optimise don't map across. The confidence you felt on a high-spec machine quietly evaporates when you're staring at a grainier image you're not sure how to improve.

This isn't a criticism of attendance courses , it's a fundamental limitation of training away from the tools you actually use.

There's also the practical reality: a day's CPD at a training centre means travel time, accommodation if it's far, the cost of the course itself, and a day of reduced clinical capacity. For a busy first-opinion practice, that's a significant ask.

What makes in-practice training different

In-practice ultrasound CPD removes the translation problem entirely.

When we come to your clinic, we train your team on your machine, in your scanning room, with your patients. Every technique, every optimisation tip, every probe position is demonstrated and practiced on the exact equipment your team will use tomorrow, next week, and next year.

That means the learning sticks. There's no mental step of "now how do I apply this to my machine?" , because you already did that during training.

It also means we can tailor the session entirely to where your team actually is. If three vets want beginner abdominal training and one wants to work on Doppler echocardiography, that's what we deliver. There's no fixed syllabus to follow and no other group's learning needs to accommodate.

For many GP vets and mixed-experience teams, the honest answer is that in-practice training should come first , it's where lasting clinical confidence is built. Attendance courses become more valuable once you already have solid foundations on your own kit.
